Climate conditions and crowd levels for each month of the year.
January brings Addis Ababa into some of its coolest and clearest nights of the year, with lows dropping to around 8°C (47°F). Cold enough that locals reach for heavier coats at nightfall. Days shine at 23°C (73°F), and the city buzzes around Ethiopian Christmas on the 7th.
February warms slightly, with highs reaching 25°C (77°F) while nights stay cool at 9°C (49°F). Rain inches up from near-zero to a modest 33mm, mostly brief afternoon showers that rarely derail plans. Light stays crystal clear for photography around churches and piazzas.
March is where Addis Ababa starts to feel the short rains approach. Highs hold at 25°C (77°F) but 66mm of rainfall means rain on about a third of days, usually building in the afternoon. Mornings stay beautiful, and jacaranda trees bloom across the city.
April deepens the short rainy season, with 91mm of rain making it the wettest month outside Kiremt. The payoff is a city turned remarkably green. The landscape around the Entoto Hills north of the city looks at its most photogenic. Days stay mild at 25°C (77°F), so plan outdoor activities for mornings.
May sees the short rains beginning to ease, with 76mm of rainfall and days that feel fresh and washed. Highs of 25°C (77°F) keep temperatures comfortable. Fewer tourists mean major sites feel noticeably uncrowded. A solid month if you don't mind the occasional shower.
June marks the transition into the main Kiremt rainy season. The 119mm of rain and steady cloud cover pull daytime highs down to 23°C (73°F). You'll notice the city moving at a quieter, more interior rhythm. Coffee ceremonies feel right in this weather.
July is the rainy heart of the year in Addis Ababa, with 239mm of rainfall and highs of only 21°C (70°F). Nights at 11°C (53°F) call for a proper jacket. Rains tend to be sustained rather than passing showers; multi-hour downpours are common. Spend this month deep in the city's notable coffee culture and museum circuit.
August is essentially a repeat of July: 241mm of rain, highs of 20°C (68°F), nights at 11°C (51°F). This is Addis Ababa at its wettest and coolest. Interestingly, the Ethiopian diaspora often returns during this period for family visits, so some neighborhoods feel livelier than low tourist numbers suggest.
September is a turning point. Rainfall drops to 132mm and the city begins emerging from the Kiremt. Days reach 21°C (71°F) and there's a palpable shift in mood as skies start clearing. The landscape stays green from months of rain, and Meskel preparations build toward the festival at month's end.
October is widely considered the finest month in Addis Ababa. Highs sit at 23°C (73°F), nights drop to 9°C (49°F), and rainfall shrinks to just 33mm. The city hosts Meskel, turning Meskel Square into East Africa's most spectacular public gathering. Everything feels post-rain fresh. Book early.
November consolidates the dry season. Only 5mm of rainfall falls, effectively none, highs linger at 23°C (73°F), and cool nights dip to 8°C (46°F). Locals call this month ideal. Schools are in session, the city keeps its normal rhythm, and visitors enjoy infrastructure without festival-season crowds. Enjoy the calm.
December brings Addis Ababa at its driest, with just 8mm of rain and highs of 23°C (73°F). Nights cool to 7°C (45°F), making the evening street food scene irresistible. Warm injera and stew against cold air is an Addis experience worth planning for. The city starts building toward Ethiopian Christmas in early January. Bring layers.
